Eagles on rise, Spartans steady in Associated Press rankings

SM-Tn Sports

For the third straight week, Summit checks in at No. 2 in the Associated Press Class 5A statewide Top 10, while Summertown gained three spots in the Class 2A rankings.

The Eagles (3-0) were awarded a victory after their game Friday at Collinwood was canceled for pandemic concerns on the part of the host Trojans, and moved from 10th to seventh ahead of their visit this week to Richland for a non-region matchup.

Summit (3-0), which stayed perfect with its 35-0 win at Columbia Central to open Region 5-5A play Friday, is listed behind defending Class 5A state titlist Knoxville Central. The Spartans, who lost to Knoxville Central in last year’s championship game, next travel to Williamson County rival Franklin for a non-region contest.

In Class 4A, Tullahoma and Marshall County virtually swapped positions following the Wildcats’ 42-7 win over the host Tigers. Both step out of Region 4-4A play this weekend, with No. 3 Tullahoma (3-0) at Franklin County and No. 7 Marshall County (1-1) at Shelbyville.

Giles County (1-1) remained at No. 9 in the Class 3A rankings after being awarded a win despite its game Friday against Region 5-3A rival East Nashville not being played; Metro Nashville teams continue to be sidelined because of local pandemic guidelines. The Bobcats will host Columbia Central in non-region play this weekend.

Lewis County moved up two slots in the Class 2A rankings, from fifth to third, after opening Region 5-2A play with a 55-6 victory against Community. The Panthers (3-0) head to East Robertson this weekend before a key league contest at Summertown.

Region 5-1A has three teams in the Top 10 – No. 5 Fayetteville, No. 6 Moore County and No. 8 Cornersville. The Tigers (2-1) maintained their position with a 20-14 league win at Huntland, with Moore County jumping into the rankings by downing then-No. 2 Cornersville 33-23 and improving to 3-0. Fayetteville takes on visiting Mt. Pleasant in a region contest Friday, while Moore County goes to Forrest and Cornersville travels to Grace Christian-Franklin in a pair of non-league clashes.

Columbia Academy opens Division II-A West Region play Friday against visiting top-ranked and two-time defending state champion Davidson Academy. The Bears (2-0) have yet to yield a point, posting back-to-back shutouts of Sycamore (50-0) and region rival Nashville Christian (35-0).
