NASHVILLE – Midweek COVID cancellations prompted Friday’s matchup between Summertown and host Donelson Christian – a battle of two teams ranked in the most recent Associated Press statewide polls.

And while the visiting Eagles, No. 7 in Class 2A, scored first, DCA scored more en route to a 31-14 victory.

Summertown quarterback Colton Shaffer completed 8 of 14 passes for 83 yards, but the visitors weren’t able to generate much of an attack after Javen Edmiston got them on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the contest – finishing with 247 yards on the night.

“It’s going to get there,” Eagles coach Leslie Mote said regarding the offense, and particularly the passing game. “This is the first night we’ve really had where it’s been dry. It’s rained on us the past two weeks we’ve played.

“You kind of take what they give you too. In my opinion they are very good in the secondary. They are very athletic, especially in the secondary.”

DCA (3-0), fourth in this week’s AP Division II-A poll, had scored 77 points in wins over Silverdale Academy and Webb (Bell Buckle) to start the season. The Wildcats continued that trend Friday, as Jon Lewis tied the game with a short run late in the opening period before Brandon Ducharme put them ahead for good with a 35-yard field goal two minutes into the second quarter.

Before halftime, Bradford Gaines and Nathan Magalei hooked up for a 25-yard scoring strike to extend the hosts’ lead to 17-7. DCA further extended the lead in the fourth quarter, but Edmiston added his second touchdown of the night with two minutes remaining to keep Summertown’s hopes alive late.

Ashton Jones added a late touchdown for the Wildcats.

“The guys are doing a good job understanding what we’re trying to do,” DCA coach Paul Wade said. “We’re not doing a whole lot. We practice a whole lot of different stuff, but on game nights we really keep it simple. Last week we just kind of hit a good roll.”

Edmiston finished with 105 rushing yards for Summertown (2-1), with Shaffer adding 52 yards on the ground. Gaines threw for 154 yards for DCA, while Jones rushed for 75 yards on seven carries.

Summertown opens Region 5-2A play Friday against visiting Lewis County. Donelson Christian visits Franklin Road Academy for a DII-A East Region contest.
