AP poll released; Battle of Top 10 region foes looms in Week 5

SM-Tn Sports

This week’s Associated Press statewide Top 10 rankings set the stage for a high-powered area matchup this weekend.

Lewis County, ranked No. 3 and unbeaten after its 28-9 win at East Robertson in Week 4, travels Friday to Region 5-2A rival Summertown. The Eagles, 3-1 following their 31-14 loss last week at Donelson Christian, are ranked ninth in the current poll — two spots down from last week.

Summertown is in pursuit of its second straight win in the series, having beaten the Panthers 21-14 last year in Hohenwald.

Summit, ranked No. 2 in each of the previous AP Class 5A polls, slipped to fifth after its 27-20 non-region loss Friday to visiting Williamson County rival Franklin. The Spartans will be idle this weekend, with their originally scheduled contest against Overton canceled as athletic activities for Metro Nashville Public Schools continue to be delayed indefinitely.

A pair of Region 4-4A teams are again ranked in the AP poll, as Tullahoma maintained its No. 3 spot and Marshall County rose two slots to No. 5 this week.

The Wildcats, who improved to 4-0 with their 41-7 win Friday over Franklin County, were scheduled to celebrate homecoming this weekend against league foe Spring Hill, but with the Raiders sidelined for pandemic concerns, will instead travel to Beech (AP No. 4-5A).

Marshall County, whose only loss was a 42-7 decision at the hands of Tullahoma over Labor Day weekend, rebounded to outgun Shelbyville 50-35 last week. The Tigers will face visiting Giles County (AP No. 8-3A, following Friday’s 42-13 win over Columbia Central) in the front half of a home-and-home season series prompted by region rival Maplewood’s inavailbility. Marshall County will travel to Pulaski for an Oct.9 clash.

Region 5-1A still boasts a trio of Top 10 teams, as Moore County and Fayetteville flip-flopped in the fifth and sixth spots this week and Cornersville retained the No. 8 slot.

Moore County (4-0) moved up after its third win against a Class 2A opponent, defeating Forrest 35-14, while Fayetteville (3-1) slipped despite a 56-20 region win over visiting Mt. Pleasant. Cornersville (3-1), which downed Grace Christian of Franklin 32-22 last week, will be idle this week as Mt. Pleasant has been sidelined for pandemic concerns, with Moore County traveling Friday to Fayetteville.
