Columbia Academy’s football team will have to shut down for two weeks following a positive coronavirus test inside the program, athletics director Pernell Knox confirmed on Monday.

Coach Charlie Lansdell watched the Bulldogs’ game two weeks ago from his vehicle, but was on the sideline during this past Friday’s game at Nashville Christian. Lansdell told SM-Tn Sports he was being admitted to the hospital Monday afternoon.

Quarterback Bryant Beranek sat out Friday night’s game as a contact-tracing precaution.

“I thought it was safer … to shut it down entirely,” Knox said.

The Bulldogs, who fell to 0-4 (0-2) with Friday’s Division II-A West Region loss at Nashville Christian, will miss this week’s league game against visiting University School of Jackson and their Oct. 2 region contest against visiting Jackson Christian.

Columbia Academy is the fourth area football program to be sidelined as a result of the pandemic. Richland and Spring Hill are each expected to play their games this week against Fayetteville and Mt. Juliet, respectively, while Mt. Pleasant is hoping to schedule a game for Saturday following a mandated two-week suspension.
