The Loretto Mustangs took back the Pegasus Cup with a 12-7 home win over Summertown, tying the all-time series at three games a piece, in a defensive slugfest on Friday night.
Holding a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, Summertown put together a 13-play, 64-yard touchdown drive that was extended on 4th-and-4 with a hard count that drew the Mustangs offsides. The Eagles took advantage, marching the additions 53 yards to pay dirt when Colton Shaffer scored on a 2-yard run with 7:31 left to cut the lead to 10-7.
With two more chances on offense, Summertown could not find any rhythm, going three-and-out and then throwing a pass at their own 1-yard-line that resulted in a safety, which helped to put the game away.
Loretto opened the scoring with a 33-yard field goal from Patton Simbeck in the second quarter.
With 2:45 left in the first half, the Mustangs blocked a Summertown punt, setting them up near the red zone. On fourth down, Loretto quarterback Carter Daniel hit Clint Seymore for a touchdown to extend the lead to 10-0 just before halftime. That score proved to be the difference.
Daniel finished with 116 yards through the air on 9-of-20 passing with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions.
