Summit takes No. 5 ranking on road for Thursday contest

SM-Tn Sports

Despite just one game in the last three weeks, Summit maintained its No. 5 ranking in this week’s Associated Press Class 5A statewide top 10.

The Spartans, who picked up a ‘COVID’ win on Sept. 18 when Overton was unable to play because Metro Nashville Public Schools had not been cleared for athletic competition, won 42-0 at Northwest the following week before their Region 5-5A game at Page last week was canceled because of pandemic concerns on the part of the hosts.

Summit (6-1, 1-0) will travel this week to league foe Franklin County (2-4, 1-1) for a game that has now been moved to Thursday because of weather concerns.

The Class 5A rankings were unchanged in their entirety from last week, with Knoxville West, Powell, Knoxville Central and Beech continuing to occupy the four spots ahead of the Spartans.

None of the teams in Class 4A moved, either, meaning that Tullahoma and Marshall County retained the third and fourth slots this week. Tullahoma (7-0), the undefeated Region 4-4A leader, comes off a 41-14 win over Brainerd and is idle Friday before traveling to Lawrence County on Oct. 16 in league play. Marshall County (6-1), which defeated 4-4A foe Lawrence County 48-0 last week, visits Giles County in a return game after the Bobcats lost 38-14 in Lewisburg on Sept. 18.

Lewis County (7-0), still No. 3 in Class 2A with Friday’s 39-7 win at Eagleville, has an open date before resuming Region 5-2A play Oct. 16 at Loretto.

The Region 5-1A triumvirate of Fayetteville (No. 3), Moore County (No. 5) and Cornersville (No. 9) still holds those positions. Fayetteville and Cornersville are both idle this weekend, following their Week 7 clash – won by the Tigers, 14-7 – while Moore County comes out of an open date and is scheduled to travel to Jo Byrns for a non-region contest.
