Rusty Spartans overcome mistakes, rout Rebels

SM-Tn Sports

Despite a pair of turnovers on each of their first two possessions, the Summit Spartans were able to shake off the rust and earn a 33-9 Region 5-5A road win against Franklin County on Thursday night.

Destin Wade tossed a pair of interceptions in the first quarter, but followed that up with a pair of touchdowns as well, including one to brother Keaten Wade, who was playing in his first game of the season following a foot injury.

Summit jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead behind the strength of its offense and stingy defense. The Spartans held Franklin County to just 117 total yards, including a paltry 31 on the ground.

Ke’Andre Johnson was a non-factor for the Rebels, completing just three passes for 11 yards and running five times for five yards.

Conversely, Destin Wade finished with 126 yards through the air on 8-of-15 passing and another 82 yards rushing. Wade connected with his brother and Brady Pierce in the game for touchdown passes. Zac Switzer, Brandon King and Pierce all had rushing touchdowns for the visiting Spartans.

Summit will now put its undefeated region record on the line against also spotless Shelbyville next week.
