Marshall County escapes Spring Hill upset bid

SM-Tn Sports

Coming off a pair of wins over the last two weeks, the Spring Hill Raiders were playing with confidence at home Friday night, and nearly upset No. 4-ranked Marshall County before falling 21-14 in double overtime.

Trailing 21-14, Spring Hill was in a must-score situation in overtime. A loss of seven yards to the 17-yard-line on first down forced the Raiders into a tough spot. Luka Boylan threw incomplete on second down, and a draw play to Mac Richie lost four more yards before a ‘Hail Mary’ to the end zone was intercepted, ending the game.

The Raiders were tasked with scoring first in the first overtime, and delivered with a pass from Boylan to Richie on first down. Marshall County answered, but it took three tries, and the extra point barely found its way over the crossbar to force a second overtime.

In the next round, Marshall County scored, again, on third down. Spring Hill nearly blocked the Tigers’ extra point attempt, but it — again — got over the crossbar by a hair. The Tigers then got a stop on the ensuing possession get out with a win.

A defensive slugfest for the vast majority of the game, both teams held each other scoreless in the second half. Marshall County’s Demari Braden led all rushers in the game with 86 yards on 20 carries. Richie led Spring Hill with 61 yards on 15 carries.

With the loss, Spring Hill will now be charged with getting a win in Week 11 over Lawrence County in order to obtain a playoff spot.
