Late score ends Summertown season on six-game slide

SM-Tn Sports

After winning three straight games to open the 2020 campaign, Summertown fell on hard times and completed a disappointing run with Friday’s 28-20 defeat at Region 5-2A rival Community.

The Eagles, ranked ninth in the state in Class 2A following victories over Mt. Pleasant, Wayne County and Collinwood (the latter a ‘COVID win’), struggled from there. Of their five on-field defeats prior to Friday, their last three had each been by less than a touchdown — including a 12-7 Pegasus Cup loss to Lawrence County rival Loretto and an 18-14 loss to Eagleville, both in league play, each hampering their postseason hopes.

Winless in Region 5-2A, Summertown looked to address that detail Friday against the league’s other winless participant. After forging a 13-12 second-quarter lead on a Javen Edmiston 30-yard run at the 7:07 mark, though, Community (2-8, 1-4) regained control a minute later and never relinquished it.

The Vikings answered on a Dallas Grooms quick-strike 59-yard pass to Maki Fleming and added a 2-point conversion run by Riker Reid, going ahead 20-13, and while Summertown forced a deadlock before halftime on a Colton Shaffer 6-yard pass to Michael Abbott, the Eagles (3-6, 0-4) never led the rest of the way.

Community scored the winning touchdown with less than two minutes remaining, as John Stanley notched the Vikings’ second big-play score — a 54-yard run — of the night with Chris Martin adding the 2-point run for the final margin.

The hosts went up early, scoring twice in the first three minutes of the game, before Summertown got on the scoreboard with an Aniken Johnson 36-yard rushing TD.
