No. 7 Brentwood hands Spring Hill first district loss

SPRING HILL — A lackluster effort on the boards in the first quarter spelled doom early for Spring Hill, as No. 7 Brentwood avenged a loss from earlier this year with a 58-42 road win.

The Lady Raiders (12-5, 7-1 11-AAA) found themselves trailing 14-2 before grabbing their first defensive rebound of the game with 2:25 to go in the first quarter.

“(Brentwood) came out ready to play tonight, and we didn’t match their intensity,” Spring Hill coach Matt Horton said. “We have to get out to a better start than we have been lately.”

On top of their early rebounding woes, Spring Hill struggled to find the bottom of the bucket early as well. The Lady Raiders needed a late bucket before the end of the quarter to cut the Bruins’ lead to 18-7 by the end of one.

“We didn’t execute what we needed to execute, and we sure didn’t box out. That got us in a hole and we played from behind from there,” Horton said.

Brentwood’s senior point guard Amelia Osgood, a Princeton commit, knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first and then a lay up to start the second, but Spring Hill roared back. The Lady Raiders cut the lead to five points at 20-15, but a wide open long ball from Kate Workman extended the lead to eight and the Bruins held serve until the break.

“That was a huge blow when we gave up the 3,” Horton said. “Against teams like them, you have to be ready from the start.”

Brentwood led 32-24 at the break, and came out with a pressure trap defense in the third quarter to push their lead to 15 points before Spring Hill could settle in. The Lady Raiders then cut the lead back to 10 points, but never any closer as the Lady Bruins stalled their offense and forced Spring Hill to foul.

“They didn’t do anything different than the first time we played them,” Horton said. “It was just one of those nights where we were just flat.

“That’s not to take away from them. They outplayed us and they deserved to win.”
