Roundup: Baseball, softball tourney recaps

SM-Tn Sports

Baseball

East Robertson 2, Richland 0: Making the trip to Cross Plains for the Region 5-A finals, the Raiders got a solid outing on the mound from Bryce Miller — but the host Indians were even better, as Peyton Clinton and Alex Patterson combined for a three-hit shutout. Clinton struck out five over five innings of work, allowing just two hits. East Robertson scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of back-to-back walks, a hit batter and a two-run Wyatt Hobgood base hit that stood up for the victory. Miller went the distance for Richland, giving up three hits, and had one of the Raiders’ three hits along with Rob Turner and Sam Edwards.

Summertown 3, Loretto 2: Grant Burleson, the Eagles’ Class A Mr. Baseball finalist, drove in the winning run as Summertown went on the road and edged its county and District 12-A rival for the Region 6-A crown. Caleb Davis and Garrett Fisher each had a pair of hits for the Mustangs while driving in a run apiece. Grayson Burleson had an RBI single for the Eagles, with Gavin Burleson picking up the victory in relief of Cory Francis, who worked five innings. Loretto will travel to East Robertson for Friday’s Class A state sectional, with Summertown to host Richland.

Softball

Summertown 4, Loretto 0: Caiti Beth Gallaher gave the host Lady Eagles all the offense they’d need for the Region 6-A title with her two-run home run in the first inning. Kaley Campbell (11 strikeouts) and Claire Woods combined for the shutout as Summertown defeated Loretto for the fifth time in as many meetings this season. Lucy Ballinger added a run-scoring single in the fifth and Hannah Lindsey followed Jenna Brazier’s sixth-inning double with a base hit. Summertown will host Jo Byrns, which fell 6-5 to visiting Houston County in the Region 5-A finals, in Friday’s sectional round. Loretto will travel to Houston County.
