MURFREESBORO — Summertown won four of five singles matches Tuesday against L&N STEM Academy of Knoxville to advance into the finals of the Small Class Girls Team Tennis tournament at the Adams Tennis Complex.

Emma Perry and Hope Jones each won in straight sets, with Gracie Kelly claiming a victory by injury default and Libby Konig bouncing back from a first-set loss to defeat Helen Rothfuss 6-1, 6-3.

Ella Konig, the Lady Eagles’ No. 1 singles player, fell to Madeline Maben 6-0, 6-3, but the following four victories pre-empted doubles play between the two teams.

Summertown will take on Chattanooga Arts & Sciences, a 4-0 semifinals winner Tuesday over Madison Magnet, in Wednesday’s 9 a.m. championship match.

Tigers tamed: Mt. Pleasant’s Jacob Randolph and Jackson Gary had a tough Tuesday at the Small Class Track & Field Championships.

Randolph qualified in the discus, but his Tuesday toss of 95 feet, 2 inches at Rockvale was 16th in the field of 16 and more than 70 feet off the winning effort of 168-4 by Union City’s Taylan Tribble.

Gary competed in both the 800 and 1600 meters, running a 5:25.12 in the 1600 to finish nearly a minute behind Carter Bradford of Sequatchie County, who won with a 4:32.43. In the 800, his 2:24.33 was short of state champ Ryan Keeton of Fairview, who ran a 1:58.49 for the win.
