MURFREESBORO — Claire Woods and Hailey Jones led the way Tuesday as Summertown announced its Spring Fling presence with a 13-0, five-inning victory over North Greene in the opening round of the Class A softball state tournament.

“In this kind of tournament, you can’t worry a whole lot about scouting reports. You have to show up and play,” Lady Eagles coach Greg Burleson said after his team improved to 32-2-1 with the victory.

Woods, a Middle Tennessee State signee, took a perfect game into the Lady Huskies’ final at-bat, finishing with 13 strikeouts and a one-hit shutout.

“My curveball is my best pitch, which I can go strong with when I can mix in the change-up and the riseball effectively,” she said. “I think we have one of the best offensive teams in the state, which we came out and proved.”

Jones, a North Alabama signee, went 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with a double, two home runs and six RBIs — ending the contest with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.

Caiti Beth Gallaher and Eryca Abbott each added a pair of hits for the Lady Eagles, who will face first-time tournament participant Eagleville, a 5-1 opening-round winner over Union City, at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
