MURFREESBORO – Earning just three singles victories, Summertown fell to Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences 4-3 in the finals of the TSSAA Small Class Girls Tennis team tournament Wednesday at the Adams Tennis Complex.

Summertown, which won the Small Class girls title in 2019, led the match 3-2 at the conclusion of the singles competition as Gracie Kelly, Libby Konig and Emma Perry won their individual matches. However, CSAS swept the two doubles contests for the comeback victory.

State competition shifts to individuals on Thursday, with Kelly and Ella Konig representing the Lady Eagles in doubles play. Turner Perry and Aniken Johnson will compete in boys doubles.

Diamond split: After an opening-round victory Tuesday, the Summertown baseball team played twice Wednesday – falling 5-0 to East Robertson, before winning an 11-1 elimination game over University School-Johnson City.

East Robertson’s Peyton Clinton took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Jake Smith singled with one out. A fielder’s choice and a groundout preserved the shutout for Clinton, who benefitted from a first-inning run, three more in the sixth and one in the seventh. Cory Francis took the loss for the Eagles.

Against University School-Johnson City – which lost 10-0 In five innings to Summertown on Tuesday – Drake Blackwood went 3-for-3 with a home run and Grayson Burleson added a pair of hits in support of his complete game six-hitter on the mound. The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the first, three in the third and ended the game with a six-run sixth inning.

Summertown will face East Robertson at 2 p.m. Thursday; with an Eagles victory, the two would play a second game to determine which team advances to Friday’s Class A state championship game.
