Moore County’s defense was dominant Friday night at home against Richland, while the offense put up points in bunches early en route to a 35-7 Region 5-1A win.

In the first half, the homestanding Raiders (8-1, 3-1) — ranked fifth in the current Associated Press Class 1A statewide Top 10 — put up 28 points on touchdowns from Kyler Parker, Tyler Smith, Dawson White and Brayden Cashion. Defensively, Moore County forced 12 negative plays from Richland.

Strong offensive performances out of halftime has been Richland’s specialty over the last two weeks, but that was not the case for a third time. The visitors got a solid kick return, but fumbled on first down and then lost yards again on a second-down read option. Quarterback Sam Edwards was short on his third down pass, and the Raiders had to punt. The punt was tipped by a Moore County rusher, and the hosts took advantage of good field position on the ensuing play.

Smith threw a wide receiver screen to Kaden Miller, which went the distance to paydirt to open the lead to 35-0.

Later in the half, Austin Seals busted a long run to set up his team in the Moore County red zone, but Edwards threw an interception to end the drive on the last play of the third quarter.

The lone bright spot for Richland’s offense came with just 12 seconds left in the game as Trevor Meadows took a 32-yard pass from Bryce Miller to the end zone for the score. Colton Trimble tacked on the extra point for Richland.

Moore County earned the No. 2 seed in the region with the win, with Mt. Pleasant the remaining team on their schedule. Richland (2-6, 1-3) can still play its way into the state playoffs with a win over Huntland — which defeated Cornersville Friday — next week.
