Summit continues to hold the No. 2 spot in the Associated Press Class 5A statewide Top 10 poll, with Summertown breaking into the Class 2A rankings this week to lead a number of area teams.
The Spartans improved to 2-0 with Saturday’s 28-7 win over visiting Spring Hill. They open Region 5-5A play Friday at unbeaten Columbia Central.
Summertown also moved to 2-0 last week, defeating Wayne County 26-6. The Eagles travel Friday to Collinwood (1-1).
In Class 4A, Marshall County moved up two spots to No. 3 following a 24-6 win at Lincoln County in the Tigers’ season opener. Marshall County faces visiting sixth-ranked Tullahoma – up two spots after moving to 2-0 with a 42-13 Coffee Pot win last week over Coffee County – in Lewisburg as both open Region 4-4A play.
Giles County slipped from seventh to ninth in Class 3A after a rain-shortened contest at Hendersonville was declared a no-contest. The Bobcats (0-1) are idle this week.
Lewis County moved up two spots to No. 5 in Class 2A following a 42-0 win over Cheatham County, the Panthers’ second in as many outings. Community visits Lewis County in Region 5-2A play Friday. Forrest, meanwhile, fell out of the Class 2A Top 10 with its loss at Portland but is the only team listed among others receiving votes. The 1-1 Rockets open league play Friday against visiting Eagleville.
Cornersville (2-0) went from fourth to second in Class 1A after its 35-13 win over Eagleville, while Fayetteville (1-1) held on to its No. 5 spot with a 41-16 win over visiting Zion Christian. Cornersville hosts Moore County in the Region 5-1A opener for both Friday, with Fayetteville traveling to Huntland – also receiving Top 10 votes, as is Moore County – in a league matchup.
