Clinging to a narrow lead late on the last play of the game, the Mt. Pleasant defense was up to the challenge. Loretto quarterback Carter Daniel, attempting to lead his team to an improbable comeback, heaved a pass to Tabias Sirmones with no time remaining in the game. Sirmones was able to come down with the ball, but couldn’t find his way into the end zone, giving Mt. Pleasant a 27-20 win, its first of the year.
The Tigers put 13 points on the board in the first quarter, behind touchdown runs from Zavier Davidson and Te’Varius Strayhorn.
Midway through the second quarter, the Mustangs put together a five-play drive that began with a 59-yard scamper from Omoro Joyner and ended with a Joyner touchdown run from a yard away to cut the deficit to 13-6 at the break.
Mt. Pleasant then forced a three-and-out from Loretto and scored on the ensuing drive, following a punt. Davidson had a long run of 41 yards to start the drive and capped it with a 6-yard run for a score, pushing his team’s lead to 20-6. He then added to the lead with a 73-yard burst to pay dirt on his team’s next possession. Davidson had a game-high 162 yards on 14 carries for the Tigers.
